US Alarms Russian Attack on Nuclear Scientists

New warnings that Russian operatives are targeting US nuclear scientists and defence contractors
Nuclears, defence contractors and government employees in a cyber-disclosure campaign, according to private sector researchers and warnings from spying agencies published Thursday.
Their objectives suggested an interest in nuclear union technology and intelligence that could help fight the Kremlin with Ukraine.
The US email safety firm Proofpot, which investigated some of the activities, said hackers followed email servers used by <x0 nuclear installations and the US industrial defence base”.
The hackers were marking entities and users with interest in the nuclear union”, Proofpot researcher Greg Lessewich told CNN.
This was possible “to see what advances [Russia's] colleagues have made in this space”, he said.
Councils from US spy and security agencies and over a dozen of its allies warned of a continuous “ ” Russian spying that tested revenge techniques in Ukraine before using them in NATO countries.
If new victims are presented, advice may help the US and its allies make an assessment of the damage to what intelligence Russian operatives were able to collect.
The hackers used a rare software usage that requires only one objective with an email system vulnerable to opening an email instead of clicking on any link.
Exploitation is capable of stealing three months of email communication from a victim along with the e-mail director of an entire organisation, the federal council said.
The Department of Energy, which oversees numerous research labs focused on nuclear energy, did not respond to a request for comment on the findings of Proofpoin.
The FBI and the National Security Agency said officials were not immediately available for interviews on federal advice.
The Russian Embassy in Washington, DC, did not respond to a request for comment.
Federal and local governments, law enforcement, as well as defence, education and energy sectors were all targeted for cyber activity, the US and their allies said without revealing specific details.
The “Actor was most likely hoping to win a strategic mirror on information, logistics and Western military political decisions”, said Sherrod DeGrpppo, deputy head of the threat intelligence in the division Unit 42 of cyber security firm Palo Alto Networks, which is also tracing activity.
The event shows a growing <x0nd mark within Russian cyber threats groups to first target Ukrainian users as a priority target and as a test for malicious cyber techniques before the wider global deployment”, the government alarm said.
“Based on the success of this and previous campaigns, it is very likely that the group (rus) will continue to target” email systems used by Western organisations.
The “is particularly disturbing that these bandits tested their methods on victims in Ukraine before targeting NATO members”, United Kingdom Security Minister Dan Jarvis said in a statement.
The detailed nature of the warning, which contains information that is not published by cyber security companies, suggests a broad collection of intelligence about the Russian intelligence group's spying on American and Allied intelligence services.
Law enforcement has also followed hackers. Thai authorities arrested a suspected member of the group in November, a Russian man in his 30s who was extradited and presented for the first time in Boston last month.
After an initial calm following Ukraine's full invasion of Russia in 2022, “we have seen, perhaps during the last year, an increase in the [Russian cybernetic] target of the United States”, Brett Leathmann, assistant director of the FBI's cyber division, told CNN this month. /Telegraph
