Trump threatens to use Iranian assets to pay damages to ships at Hormuz

US President Donald Trump warned that any damage caused to cargo ships or ships, amid tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, will be compensated using Iranian assets under the control of the United States.

This statement prompted immediate reaction from Tehran.

“From now on, every and all damage caused to ships, cargo ships or anything related to them will be paid with Iranian money that the United States owns and controls”, Trump wrote on his platform, Social Truth on July 24th.

Tehran condemned Trump's statements, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aracchi called the American leader's proposal a <x0).

“The selection of assets of another state to pay claims in the future that have no connection with them is a stimulating precedent”, Aracchi wrote in an X post.

He warned that “s that celebrate or benefit from these funds should remember that once governments normalise the seizure, no one's assets will be safer”, adding that the resulting “kaos will be neither beautiful nor peaceful”.

These developments come as the U.S. Central Army Command (CENTCOM) said its forces ended the 13th consecutive night of attacks on Iran, adding that the Hormuz Strait remains open for sea passage.

“CENTCOM has hit the central commander of the Iranian Army, residences of drones, communication networks, maritime surveillance sites and sea skills to reduce even more threats Iran poses to civil sailors and commercial ships passing through the Hormuz Strait”, it was said at the announcement of the US Command published on July 24th.

The international waterway “remains open for navigation despite recent attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Commercial ships continue to sail freely through the straits with the support of the US Army”, CENTCOM added.

Tensions between the US and Iran have increased as a ceasefire reached in mid-June collapsed and parties resumed attacks after Washington accused Tehran of attacks on ships passing through the Hormuz Strait.

Hormuz Strait is a key sea route, as a fifth of the world's oil and gas passes through it.

The US has said Iran is using this strait as a means of pressure, arguing that it is an international corridor protected by international law.
