Experts warn of increased poisonings related to weight loss injections

Health - care professionals presented 149 reports in 2025 involving patients who had used infectious weight loss drugs, compared to 76 reports in 2024, according to data from the Dutch National Helms Information Centre (NVIC) in UMC Utrecht, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported today.

Officials believe that the actual number of cases is perhaps higher, since not all incidents are reported or officially related to these drugs.

Experts describe this trend as disturbing, showing a growing market in which people receive injections for internet weight loss or through informal networks instead of doctors.

Medicines such as Ozempic were originally developed for Type 2 diabetes, and were later approved for treatment of obesity under medical supervision.

However, increased popularity in social media and popular approvals have contributed to widespread use among people without clinical guidelines. Researchers warn that this shift from regulated use to self-directed increases the risk of wrong doses and side effects.

More recently, concerns have also increased around the reform, sometimes called “Tripe G”, an experimental weight loss drug that has not yet been adopted for prescription use in the Netherlands.

In 2025, NVIC recorded six related poisoning reports, increasing to 12 cases in only the first five months of this year. Because the drug is not officially registered, it is not available through legal medical recipes, but can still be accessed through online markets.
