Ukraine's parliament approves historic EU aid package worth 90 billion euros

Ukraine's parliament approved a 90 billion-euro loan from the European Union on Thursday, according to the European Commission.
Credit support is expected to provide Ukraine with critical funds for its defence, especially to strengthen its air defence.
The European Council had approved the agreement in April, after Hungary and Slovakia lifted their objections, ending a prolonged period of disputes that had blocked the EU's largest financial package for Kiev.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, referring to the adoption, spoke of “one of the most important votes”, thanking MPs who ratified the agreement quickly.
Paying in Two Annual Cent
The financing will be distributed into two annual 45 billion-euro installments, with approximately two-thirds going towards defence spending and the rest on the state budget.
The EU has submitted the aid as a loan, but Ukraine will repay it only if it receives compensation in the future from Russia a scenario considered impossible. The EU will also cover interest.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the first payments are expected in June.
