Supreme Court Resigns Special Appeals Decision, Erion Veliaj Remains in Cell

The Supreme Court has handed down the Special Appeal Court ruling regarding Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, ruling “Arrest in prison”.
With that decision, Veliaj will continue to remain in Durres' detention cells.
Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj has been in prison custody since February 10th 2025, following the SPAK investigation into a widespread corruption file.
The Special Prosecutor has pressed 13 counts against him, among them passive corruption, money laundering, property failure and abuse of office.
According to the SPAK, Veliaj allegedly benefited illegally money and assets from companies that have obtained construction permits or public funds from Tirana City Hall.
His wife, Ayala Xoxa, is also under investigation for passive corruption, money laundering and hiding income. The Supreme Court decided today to give up the <x0) prison arrest measure”, bringing down Veliaj's request for freedom or softer security measures.
