Hundreds arrested in France after mad champions League celebrations

The clashes between football fans and police throughout France have led to more than 400 arrests after the victory of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the final of the Champions League against Arsenal.

Thousands of police were committed to curb the riots, which caused disruptions in bus, trains and railway transport services in the capital of Paris.

Fireworks and flares were thrown during the festivities, while several policemen remained injured in the clashes. Order forces used tear gas to disperse crowds into the center of the city.

While this was another victory for the SPG, it was accompanied by a new wave of football-related violence for the second year in a row, as the French team's triumph in 2025 had triggered celebrations that ended tragically, writes. BBC.

Images from Paris seem to indicate flaming flares, electric bicycles burning on the street, and celebrants that break glass from at least a bar or store.

The renowned Champs-Élysées Avenue was filled with fans shortly after the French team won after the penalty execution. Earlier in the day, there were clashes between police and fans who had gathered to follow the finals on giant screens at the Parc des Prince's SPG Stadium.

Police reported that six vehicles, two businesses and a bus shelter were damaged during the riots.

France's Interior Ministry announced that by the early hours of Sunday 416 people had been arrested, of them 280 in Paris.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said seven police officers were injured and named the riots as “absolutely unacceptable”.

The leader of the far right, Marine Le Pen, wrote on the social network X: “In France alone, the victory of a football club causes unrest”.

In France alone, everyone feels obliged to close in their homes on the evening of a victory to avoid facing violence”, she added.

SPG players are expected to participate in a holiday parade Sunday afternoon, which includes a march near Champ-de-Marc, near the Eiffel Tower, as well as a reception by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Last year, the SPG European triumph was marred by clashes that left two people dead, including a 17-year-old.
