John Bolton admits guilty of illegally holding"te for secrets", former Trump adviser faces prison

John Bolton, former national security adviser to Donald Trump, has been found guilty of misusing classified security information about the notes he compiled for a book.

Bolton, who is already a prominent critic of the American president, was indicted on 18 counts related to inadequate treatment of classified materials and was initially declared innocent.

On Friday, he admitted a single charge of illegal possession of classified information. The documents he carried included journal notes with national defence information, some classified at the “teper secret” level.

According to prosecutors, Bolton faces a prison sentence of up to five years and has agreed to pay a $2.25m fine.

It will also inform national security officials of classified information it has illegally kept, as well as conduct 100 hours of community service.

During the trial hearing after the judge read the charges, including sending journal notes with sensitive information to members of his family, Bolton acknowledged that the charges were correct.

“I did, your honour”, Bolton said, adding that “was sorry about this”.

According to American media, he will be sentenced on October 28th.
