Berlin has responded to US President Donald Trump's calls to help keep the shipping corridors in the Strait of Hormuz, with a government spokesman saying: “This war has nothing to do with NATO. It is not a NATO war”, CNN reports.
The comment made by Chancellor Friedrich Merz comes after Trump made an indirect threat to the NATO alliance, saying it could face a very bad “future”.
The German government also reiterated once again that it will not participate in any activity in the Hormuz Strait.
“The turnout is not considered before this war and is not currently considered”, the government spokesman added.
This morning, arriving in Brussels, Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadefhul also told reporters he sees no role for NATO members in the Hormuz Strait.
Merz has exacerbated his stance in recent days as the war with Iran continues without any sign of outcome. Last week he criticised the US for easing sanctions on Russia and has openly said it is not clear what the US plan to end the war is.
Cornelius told reporters that “prior to the war both the United States and Israel made it clear that European aid was neither required nor desired”.
The German Chancellor will meet later today in Berlin with Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Both leaders are likely to face questions on their response to Trump and his demands.
