A missile launched by Iran, passing through Iraq and Syria's airspace and heading towards our airspace from the Hatay region, has been destroyed by NATO air defence systems”, it said in a statement, CNN.
Part of the prevention missile has dropped into an open area of southern Turkey, but no life loss or injury reported.
This is believed to be the first time that NATO forces have seized an Iranian missile that travelled towards a member country's airspace since the conflict in the Middle East erupted over the weekend.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan today called his Iranian counterpart in connection with the missile, a Turkish diplomatic source has indicated.
Hakan Fidan “conveyed the reaction (of Turkey)” regarding the missile and “decide that any step that could lead to the spread of the conflict must be avoided”, this source has declared.
NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart told CNN that the bloc condemns Turkey's <x0-marking from Iran”.
“NATO stands firm with all the allies, including (Turkey), as Iran continues its attacks indiscriminately in the entire region”, she said. Our position of prevention and protection remains strong in all areas, including when it comes to air and missile protection. /Periscopi
