A group of civil society organisations has called on political parties, their leaders and MPs to commit themselves to reaching a political consensus for electing the president.
10 organisations as they point out in their letter, praising current political developments consider the real danger of the country facing early elections again due to the lack of political agreement on electing the president.
Keeping in mind that the country has already passed an extended period without full institutional stability, any further delay in the full institution-building violates the democratic functioning of institutions, economic development and civic trust in the political system”.
“Consensis for electing the president is a must for institutional stability. Frequent early elections should not be considered an instrument to ensure the functioning of institutions, but rather, they increase uncertainty and undermine institutional continuity. A consensus-elected president offers stability, ensures normal functioning of powers and increases civic trust in state institutions”, said further in their letter.
“Therefore, we call on all parliamentary subjects to -- engage with seriousness and responsibility in constructive interparty dialogue,- to put civic interest in party calculations -- contribute to reaching an agreement ensuring full institutional functioning”.
Civil society considers institutional stability to be public interest and joint political responsibility.
“Any failure to reach solutions in the remaining deadline will be considered a failure of the political will to ensure stability and democratic functionality”.
