Tragic balance from Ebola to Congo on 1,000 victims increases concern over spread

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a serious health crisis, as the Ebola explosion has claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people.

According to health authorities, this is Ebola's explosion at the fastest rate of ever recorded spread. The ongoing conflict, resistance of some local communities and challenges to the authorities' response are making it difficult to control the epidemic.

The director general of the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced that 1,031 victims have so far been confirmed.

Meanwhile, the latest statistics of the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo show that 2,473 confirmed cases have been recorded, while at least 737 patients are being treated in hospitals or in isolation centres.

The blast, announced on May 15th, differs from most of Ebola's previous epidemics, as the version of the virus currently flowing does not have an approved vaccine or treatment, writes Abcnews.al.

Experts stress that the death rate is the fastest ever recorded for the disease. By comparison, the Ebola epidemic in West Africa during 20132016 caused more than 11,000 casualties from at least 28,000 cases, while the total of 1,000 deaths was reached after about eight months.
