In this regard, the organisation “Opre Roma Kosova” will protest Tuesday from 11:00 in Gracanica.
“Proteta comes in response to an incident that took place in Gracanica on Saturday, August 18, 2023. The incident included Burhan Ibrahimovic, a respected member of the Roma community. Ibrahimovic has been sent to the local police station following charges of a conflict with a resident of Gracanica. But what had to be a routine procedure to gather both sides of history took a disturbing” turn.
“Burhan Ibrahimovich, once arrived at the police station, was shockingly denied the opportunity to give his statement about the alleged conflict. Instead of giving him a fair chance to present his view, he was given a fine of action that immediately raised concerns about the authorities ' intentions. The situation took an even worse turn when a group of 4-5 police officials at the Gracanica police station accompanied Burhani into a separate room. In what can only be described as a terrible abuse of power, he was subjected to brutal physical violence, a violation that flagrantly ignores his basic human rights. The incident left Burhan beaten and bruised, both physically and emotionally”, the announcement said.
This incident underlines systemic issues within the framework of law enforcement and highlights the urgent need for reforms. The movement strongly believes that each individual, regardless of his background, deserves to be treated with dignity, justice and respect”.
The peaceful procedure will be held in front of the Gracanica police station, starting at 11:00. Opre Roma Kosova requires participation and support from local authorities, international organisations, media, civil society groups and citizens interested in staying together for justice, equality and human rights”.
