The 24th anniversary of the 1999 exhibition, over 700 thousand Kosovo refugees took refuge in Kukes

Every 16 April many Kosovo citizens return to Kukes to commemorate the 99th edition, where they found hospitality and open heart for them. Sheshed Hetemi of dozens of Kosovo Albanians, like every April 16th, came to Kukes to remember those terrible days of 24 years when they had to leave their homes to escape ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, from the Serbian Army.
With popular music and flags on their hands, they marched just as in the 1999 ecstasy from the border between the two countries to the center of the city of Kukes, where they found hospitality, generosity, and open heart for them.
We're out of the war and we're here in Kukes. Once on foot with tractors. They've been waiting for us here very well. Thank you for that. On bread, sleeping. They helped us with everything. We come to remember. We never forget. They're brothers to us. From the municipality of Lipjan”, said former refugee Shehuide Ethmi for Albanian.com.
Tafil Cena from the village of Bicaj, during the crisis, has helped 74 citizens from Kosovo. He recalls that their accommodations at the time were difficult, but he hard and eager says that he succeeded.
This is Tafil Chen from Bicaj. We've kept a lot of families. About 75 people. From Suhareka Bay. We kept them on our own. From their plight, we agreed to overcome that challenge. Food supplies have been difficult. We have kept them until the liberation of Kosovo from Nato. We didn't have many bedrooms. Then the State helped us with bread. We keep in touch with them. We go there, they come here. I also remember an old elder who was bleeding and who showed that they had barely escaped. Hard day”, Tafil Cena said.
With Kosovo Albanians coming to recall the 99xod was Albania's ambassador to Kosovo, Kemal Minxhozi.
This is a symbolic, great desire of Kosovo citizens to commemorate this day. I think that the people of Kosovo have never forgotten the great hospitality the people of Kukes informed them of, said Kemal Minxhozi, Albania's ambassador to Kosovo
About 700 thousand persons were sheltered at home, facilities of institutions and camps that were set up for their reception in Kukes until 13 June 1999, when Kosovo was liberated from NATO and the KLA.
