“They have suffered major losses, but in the meantime, we cannot rule out the possibility that Bakhmut may fall on the following days”, he said, speaking after the meeting of EU defence ministers in Stockholm, Sweden.
The head of the Western military alliance supporting Ukraine stressed as “is important to underline that this would not necessarily make any turning point to war”.
This points out that we should not underestimate Russia. We must continue to provide aid to Ukraine”, he said.
Bakhmut's current status is highly disputed. The Russian mercenary group Wagner claimed on Wednesday that he has captured part of the eastern city.
The announcement came days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Bakhmut's fall would enable Moscow a “open-air” for deeper attacks on Ukraine.
The fierce fight about Bakhmut is the bloodiest and longest since the beginning of the war, which has displaced millions of Ukrainians. /Periscopi/
