The Central Election Commission has officially launched the process for organising the extraordinary April 23rd elections for the chairman of four municipalities (North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposaviq and Zubin Potok) and early elections for two municipal municipalities (Zvecan and Leposaviq). These elections were scheduled to be held on 18 December and 25 December of [...]
These elections were scheduled to be held on December 18th and 25th of last year, but were postponed by Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, due to the unstable security situation in that part of Kosovo.
CEC spokesman Valmir Elezi has told Economy Online that the CEC has set all deadlines for activities to organise these elections.
“Starting today, March 9th, begins task deadlines for organising extraordinary elections for chairman of four municipalities: Northern Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposaviq and Zubin Potok and early elections for the municipalities of the two municipalities: Zvecan and Leposaviq. All these activities refer to the 45-day deadline, so from today to election day”, Elez said.
According to Elezit for the CEC, the former process of certificate of candidates for participation in the election process, scheduled to be held during December last year. What political parties have to do is confirm certified candidates.
Also, for the CEC, the certificate process is not complete, as this institution will enable the candidacy for participation in the elections even political subjects that had not applied during that time.
“During the last two months of 2022, the Central Election Commission has certified 11 candidates to participate in the mayoral elections in either of the four municipalities and 63 candidates to compete in elections for the two municipal municipalities. This process will be valid, meaning that political subjects will be able from 9 March to 13 March to confirm certified candidates in November and December last year. Meanwhile, in addition to confirming certified candidacy, the CEC will also accept new applications from political parties, independent candidates, civic initiatives or coalitions. This could be done during the 10-day deadline, from 9 to 18 March”, Elez explained.
According to the CEC's decision, by 24 March, this institution will decide on approval/refuse the Certificate of political subjects and candidates, while the election campaign is scheduled to last 18 days, from April 4th to April 21st.
