Former Kosovo Ambassador to Germany Bequfaj has said that Kosovo should accept the Franco-German plan and that Prime Minister Albin Kurti should agree with the establishment of the Serb majority municipalities' association because Kosovo should not remain without Western protection.
In an editorial for Frankfurter Allgemene Zeitung, part of which has brought DI into Serbian language, Cufaj has criticised Kurti for stubborn, saying there is no difference from his predecessors to Kosovo institutions.
There are two problems here. The first is that Kosovo fears that Serbs, who are politically controlled by Belgrade, could seek reunification with Serbia. Another problem, from my point of view, is Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti”, writes Cufaj.
“After two years in power it seems that Kurti has no difference from his predecessor. Albanians from Kosovo are emigrating massively to Germany. Corruption and nepotism still reign, the party manages the” institutions, says Cupaj.
The boat without tanks, planes and a large army is making Americans and Germans nervous
In his opinion, Serbian President Vuciq has fearfully accepted the Franco-German plan, while Kurti's message as the opinion suggests is refusing to form association. Cufaj recalls that Kurti still insists such association can exist only in the event of recognition of Kosovo by Serbia.
This upsets international partners, especially Americans and Germans. After two years in power, Kurti will have to give up both pre-election promises. There has been no better life for citizens, and the Association of Serbian Communists cannot prevent”, writes Cufaj.
Kosovo has stubborn prime minister, but there are no tanks, planes and large armies. Vucinac has it, as Kurt complains, is Putin's protracted arm. Scholz's advisers, Macron and Beden can answer that they will protect him from Vuciqi and Putin with NATO troops”.
Are you afraid of the West Wucinki because he's Putin's friend? No. But diplomats convinced their politicians: we will save Vuciqi from the pressure to recognise Kosovo de jure, but in exchange we will distance him from Putin and Kosovo will receive de facto recognition from Serbia. This is normal. Maximum of minimum. Provided Kosovo gives autonomy to its Serbs”, Cufaj points out.
Must the West turn its back on Kosovo, for which it has deployed thousands of soldiers for more than two decades to maintain fragile peace only because Kurti refuses an agreement with Serbia? “Kosovo cannot afford to stay without Western protection”.
Cufaj said European and American diplomats took little care of the Kosovo theme after declaring independence 15 years ago.
There was endless conversation and little results. New crises were emerging on the geopolitical table. Talks between Pristina and Belgrade were a favourable area for figures. Putin stood on one side with his loyal soldier in Serbia, former Milosevic's minister, Aleksandar Vuciq. On the other hand, the West with the rebel child Kosovo. Who had the upper hand? Putin, of course. If you were talking about Kosovo and Serbia with Angela Merkel, the conversation would actually be for Putin”, writes Cufaj in an editorial for the Frankfurter Alliance Zeitung weekly.
According to Cufaj, everyone woke up when Putin marched to Ukraine.
The Balkans again became the subject. Earlier in Brussels, there have been endless talks and technical agreements between Kosovo and Serbia, 33 signed agreements that have not been implemented. With Russia's aggression against Ukraine, everything became irrelevant”.
