Kosovo benefits 75m euros from European Union

The Kosovo government and the European Union have signed a 75m-euro financial agreement under the Instrument for Pre-membership Assistance to the European Union programme, known to the IPA acronym, which is funded by the EU for Western Balkan countries. The agreement is signed between Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi and the chief of the European Union Office in Kosovo, Thomas Szunyog.

Funds received Friday by Kosovo, through this agreement, will be used for the energy sector.

The agreement comes into force from February 24th, Bislimi said, adding that these tools will help address the impact of the energy crisis that Kosovo, like other European states, is experiencing.

“We will immediately apply for the disbursement of 90 per cent of the money funds ahead of this deal. So for 67.5m euros, which are expected to be quickly disbursed to the state budget. Meanwhile, the rest of the 7.5m euros will be distributed over the next year after meeting the conditions set out in financial agreement”, Bislimi said.

Even the chief of the EU office, Thomas Szunyog, said that with these tools Kosovo will maintain the sustainability of electricity supply.

This is part of 500 million in assistance to Western Balkan partners. The reason the EU has mobilised this is because Russian aggression against Ukraine, is behind impact on the world market, especially in that energy market,” he stressed.

Since July last year, the government has imposed emergency energy measures due to the Kosovo energy crisis.

To save electricity, the Government of Kosovo, in October last year, has earmarked sixm euros for subsidies to efficient heating equipment, while the bills of consumers saving electricity are also subsidised.
