Russia returns attacks on Ukrainian civilians: 23 dead after the Zaporisiza attack

A Russian attack on the Ukrainian town of Zaporisizia left at least 23 people dead and injured dozens more, an official said Friday, just hours before Moscow announced the annexation of several Ukrainian territories, following a escalation of the seven-month war. Zaporizija regional Governor Oleksandre Starukk made the announcement in an online statement Friday. He said there were at least 28 injured when Russian forces targeted a humanitarian convoy heading to Russia's occupied territory, the Associated Press reported on Friday.
He posted images of burnt vehicles and bodies lying on the street. Russia immediately rejected the attack.
The attack comes as Moscow prepares to annex four regions in Russia following an internationally criticised referendum as part of Ukraine's invasion. These regions include areas near Zaporisiza, but not the city itself, which remains in the hands of Ukraine.
Starukh said those in the column planned to travel to Russia's territory occupied to take their relatives and then to lead to safer locations.
