In the survey that the Balkan Barometer conducted, 20% of businesses in Albania have confirmed they are ready to apply a suitable model for passing the economic model based on the surrounding economy.
The European Union is strongly supporting the new model of the surrounding economy, which returns to waste products, versus the current linear model where resources are consumed, generating waste that is not used and creates pollution. The implementation of this model in Albania has started in several businesses, in the waste processing sector of animals, medical plants, olive, scrip, vehicles and oil wastes, but the concept is still not widely recognised by businesses. Also, the Albanian government has not yet adapted the legal framework that facilitates the application of this model in Albania.
Survey data shows that Western Balkan economies are far behind in their efforts to move towards a surrounding economy.
At the regional level, almost a quarter of respondents (25%) said they were not sure whether their business model allows it, followed by another 31% who said they had not taken into account this model. A large part of businesses in the Balkans think the transition to the rotating economy cannot be realised unless appropriate incentives are achieved.
However, by 2020, businesses in Rajon are more aware of the surrounding economy.
In Rajon Kosova is a predecessor, as 64% of respondents have claimed they are prepared to apply a surrounding economic model.
According to Barometer, 64% of respondents, the most important obstacle to moving towards a circular economy is additional spending.
As part of negotiations for EU membership and part of the UN's agenda for sustainable development, Albania must embrace this economic model. So far, however, businesses that implement the model of the surrounding economy are counting with one hand's fingers and are more motivated by the need to increase profits than to embrace the newest trend. /Monitor. al
