Kosovo away EU ) these are the criteria to be met, dialogue with Serbia defining

Kosovo institutions have consistently suggested that they prioritize the application in international mechanisms. The country's prime minister, Abin Kurti, has again said that this year Kosovo will apply for membership candidate status to the European Union (BE). Political connoisseurs say Kosovo must meet a set of political criteria, [...]

They even say that even closing the dialogue with Serbia could offer Kosovo membership to the European Union. Political Science Professor Dorajet Imer has said that Kosovo can apply for EU membership, but is far from closer to this institution. The application for candidate status he considers efforts for Kosovo to be active in foreign policy.

We are likely to apply, but we are unlikely to be accepted. It is an indication that this is an effort Kosovo is aiming to be active in foreign policy, in the meantime through this mechanism could also strengthen Kosovo's argument in foreign policy because otherwise it is to be on the continent of Europe, otherwise it is to be applicant or EU candidate”. Imer says that to become part of the union, a host of economic criteria, respect of laws, rules of society, etc.

But since according to him, these are just technical issues, while the main standards are geopolitical. “The EU is a very long process that requires initially a democratic society, with a stable economy, with respect to the laws, the rules of a society and, above all, requires standards that need to be met, so these are only technical aspects, and we know that the EU does not only expand by meeting the standards for membership in that structure, but also because of its geopolitical rules, and because we have to do even geopolitically, we understand that the situation also remains in the political will of existing EU members who can accept or not that Kosovo is part of this structure. So I have to look at it with a skeptical eye that at the moment Kosovo is far from that road and will probably depend on a lot of” factors.

Ending the dialogue with Serbia, he has considered it possible that Kosovo will be some steps closer to the EU. The “Dialogue with Serbia is also the obstacle, but also the possibility at the same time. Kosovo, completing talks with Serbia in a form that would enable Kosovo its functioning as a democratic, secure and inconsistent state, would also be the possibility for Kosovo that in a not-very close future, it could become part of the EU”.

While politicologist Arbnor Sadiku stressed that it is being recognised by the five member states that Kosovo's chances will be minimal to receive candidate status. He has added that if after the application we do not gain candidate status, it will be back in integration processes. Kosovo still has issues with recognition by the five EU member states, and without solving this problem Kosovo's likelihood will be minimal to obtain candidate status within international organisations, and this is a major challenge for Kosovo institutions. However, the application is not that someone forbids it and at this stage we can apply, but if we do not gain candidate status, it will be a setback in integration processes and membership in international organisations in the Republic of Kosovo”. Sadiku argued that Kosovo's dialogue with Serbia will be to continue the further path to the EU.

A country to join the EU must meet the Copenhagen and Madrid criteria otherwise known as political, judicial and economic criteria. The additional criteria are Madrid's criteria for respecting minorities and other minorities that live in Kosovo, and this should be as a measuring and progressive criterion for Kosovo's arrival in the European Union, but we need to keep in mind that there are not only these criteria that determine the acquisition of this status, and the political context, the dialogue with Serbia will be influential in terms of determining and granting Kosovo's candidate to continue its path to the EU<1>, Sadiku said.
