According to the AP News, Telegrafi reports, police in the Valais (state) canton were announced shortly after 6am for emergency in the Grand-Combin mountain group. Seven rescue helicopters have been sent.
As reported by 17 mountaineers in various groups, they were in the area when blocks of ice split to an altitude of 3,400 feet [3,400 m]. Two people a 40-year-old French woman and a 65-year-old Spanish man died at the scene.
Police said nine other people were sent to hospitals in Zion and Lausanne and that two were seriously injured. Other climbers were evacuated by helicopter.
