For three days, KFOR in co-operation with the Kosovo Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs has moved to enable the opening of roads for movement of citizens in the north after some of the police were closed with the intention of stopping smuggling.
A KFOR official told TIMEs that he supports the efforts of institutions in Kosovo to strengthen rule of law and curb criminal activities in Kosovo.
“We continue to support the Kosovo Police to prevent smuggling and trafficking activities, even in northern Kosovo. In the period of April 26th-28th, KFOR in close co-ordination with the Kosovo Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs took action to fix obstacles on two roads near the Administrative Border Line”, he said.
The plan said that security measures aimed at improving police and maintaining a safe and secure environment “should be weighed proportionally with the needs of local communities and with freedom of movement for local residents”.
KFOR remains fully focused to ensure a safe environment and freedom of movement for all communities living in Kosovo, said at the end of the response.
Kosovo police have closed several roads that were used for smuggling in border areas linking Kosovo with Serbia and northern Macedonia.
Portal Kosovo Online had reported in recent days that KFOR has opened a road in Leposaviq, as police had acted there even in stopping smuggling. He reported that another route to Zubin Potok was opened.
