The European Union plans to sanction the largest Russian lender Sberbank and other Russian financial companies in the next round of restrictions, European Commission Chairman Ursula von der Leenen told a German newspaper.
“We are looking further at the banking sector, especially the Sberbank, which represents 37% of the Russian banking sector”, said von der Leenen for Bild am Sonntag when asked about the next sixth round of sanctions.
The US had deployed “heavy sanctions” to Sberbank and Alpha Bank, in early April. The UK has also sanctioned Sberbank and has pledged to complete all Russian coal and oil imports by the end of 2022.
But the EU had so far saved Sberbank and Gazprombank, because they were the main roads for its oil and Russian gas payments.
In the fifth round of penalties, the EU had announced a range of restrictions, including a “complete ban on transactions” in four banks representing 23% of Russia's banking sector.
