In a joint statement, Prime Minister Yacinda Ardern and Foreign Minister Nana Mahuta said bringing this legal initiative to their country's parliament this week would empower the government to charge Russia with new sanctions.
“The Sanctions Forum to Russia will be passed by rapid procedure to impose more expanded sanctions on Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine”, Ardern said.
The government has also published a new list blocking President Putin's trip, Prime Minister Mikhail Misustin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu, along with 98 other officials.
At the new initiative, New Zealand would freeze the assets of Russian officials and enable people and companies to carry money and assets from other countries that have already imposed sanctions on Russia.
She said the new legislature is designed only for Russia's attack in Ukraine and would allow her government to impose new sanctions.
