The Human Rights Watch for LGBTI Rights programme through a letter has been addressed to the country's president, Vjosa Osmani, Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Justice Minister Albulen Hadziu regarding the Kosovo Civil Code.
The director of the LGBT program for rights, Grame Reid, under Human Rights Watch, as it was discussing Kosovo's Civil Code, said uncertainty about civil unions endangers couples of the same sex, as well as their families.
Reid said the Constitution of Kosovo does not foresee gender restrictions on freedom of marriage, where, according to him, Article 37 of the Constitution of Kosovo says everyone has the right to marriage and the right to have a family.
However, the Kosovo Civil Code, adopted last year, discriminatedly limits the marriage of marriage of various sexes, excluding couples of the same sex”, the statement said.
In response, Kosovo's Civil Code reportedly goes on to say that union between same-sex persons is allowed, but according to the Human Rights Watch programme for LGBI rights, he [Syvil Code] does not provide any mechanism for recognition of these unions.
The Human Rights Watch programme for LGBTI rights has said they expect the Government of Kosovo to work to ensure that couples of the same sex have the same rights as other couples, and to eradicate discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
“We are willing to provide information and advice and look forward to legislation that will end discrimination in family law and offer the strongest possible protection for couples of the same sex and their families”, it is said in response, Klankosova.tv conveys.
We remember that today in the Kosovo Assembly, there has been no adopted completion of the Kosovo Civil Code that allows the marriage of persons of the same sex.
