Energy was deliberately left out of previous sanctions, Scholz said in a press release Monday, adding that Russia's energy is of crucial importance to the general life of its citizens.
“Essentially, Europe's supply of energy for heat, electricity supply and industry cannot be provided in any other way”, he stressed.
The EU relies on Russia for 40% of its gas needs and about 27% of oil imports.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, when asked about the potential for sanctions on Russian energy, said options that were unimaginable three weeks ago are now on the table.
We need to think about how we can all leave as soon as possible from dependence on Russian hydrocarbons, oil and gas. Everybody's doing this. Everyone is in the same direction”, Johnson said.
On Sunday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US is working with its allies in Europe to examine the possibility of stopping Russian oil imports in an effort to further punish the aggressor country.
