More than 400 Russian mercenaries are operating in Kiev under Kremlin orders to kill Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his government in order to pave the way for Moscow to take control, The Times reveals on Monday.
What's the Wagner Group?
The Wagner Group, a private militia led by a Russian President Vladimir Putin ally and acting as an independent branch of state, brought mercenaries from Africa five weeks ago on a mission to cut off the head of the government Zelensky for a huge financial bonus.
Information about this mission arrived in the Ukrainian government on Saturday and, hours later, Kiev declared a 36-hour severe curfew for its included “ ” city for Russian designers.
Ukrainian authorities warned civilians, when they proclaimed the curfew, that they would be regarded as Kremlin agents and threatened to “muid” if they left their shelters.
A source close to the group's activities, The Times reports, confirmed that between 2,000 and 4,000 mercenaries had arrived in Ukraine in January.
Some were sent to the eastern regions of Donnetsk and Luhansk, while another 400 entered Belarus and headed for the capital.
