The threat of an invasion of Ukraine by Russia has given enormous importance to US and NATO defence in Eastern Europe.
NATO has 4 battalions in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, operating in rotation. Each of the battalions is led by the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany or the US, and contains troops from several NATO member states. Last month, the Alliance said all four battalions “are strong and ready for war”.
Secretary - General NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said NATO is also ready to further reinforce its presence in Eastern Europe by sending other troops to the area.
Meanwhile, the US has its bases in Lithuania and Romania, along with several bases in Poland. President Joe Biden last week approved sending 3,000 additional troops to Poland, Germany and Romania.
Actually, NATO does not have troops in Ukraine and does not plan to send troops there. But, even though Ukraine is not a NATO member, the Alliance gives strategic advice to this country.
Other NATO assets in the region include a missile defence system in Romania, designed to <x0cpur, track, attack and destroy” ballistic missiles in the atmosphere. A similar defence system will become operational in Poland this year.
