Following the United States' warning that Russia could soon attack Ukraine, the state's Foreign Affairs Minister Dmitry Kuleba announced that he has talked with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, confirming that a package of heavy sanctions against Russia has been prepared. In addition to sanctions, the Ukrainian chief diplomat said the European Union would make efforts to provide its country with political and financial support, expressing thanks for the bloc's stance.
“Talk focused on Josep Borrell for the current security situation. Confirmed: the package of heavy sanctions against Russia has been prepared. The EU will make special efforts to provide Ukraine with political and financial support. Grateful for its firm stand and readiness for decisive action”, Kuleba wrote in his Twitter account.
Otherwise, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has said the Russian attack on Ukraine is likely to begin in the coming days, though he added it is still not clear whether Russian President Vladimir Putin has given the order to attack.
Sullivan said American intelligence believes Russia's President Vladimir Putin may order a break before the end of the Winter Olympics, held in Beijing, and that a quick attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, is possible.
