Beden and Zelensky spoke for the last time in January and their conversation “went wrong”, a senior Ukrainian official for CNN said at the time.
The conversation with Zelensky comes a day after the Russian President Vladimir Putin warned during a call that the US and its allies will respond to “in a firm manner and will impose swift and heavy costs” on Russia if Putin decides to invade Ukraine.
Biden National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan issued a sharp warning Sunday that the United States believes Russia could launch an invasion of Ukraine this week, but still hopes diplomacy will prevail.
The United States has estimated that Russia has more than 100,000 military troops near the border with Ukraine. Since Saturday, the US had displaced some of its forces from Ukraine and ordered the evacuation of most of its embassy staff Saturday, as fears increased for a possible Russian invasion, CNN writes.
