Energy crisis experts: The government has to take gas supplies seriously, because it has a duty.

The Institute for Development Research “Riinvest” in collaboration with the Kosovo Open Society Foundation (KFOS) has organised debate on the gas issue in Kosovo, in the context of strategic orientations to the energy sector. Alban Hashan, executive director of the “Riinvest” Institute, said European Union lawmakers in support of [...] in July of this year.

Alban Hashan, executive director of the “Riinvest” Institute, said that in July of this year European Union lawmakers in support of the European Commission's proposal have decided that natural gas be considered green and sustainable energy source.

Therefore, under circumstances where Kosovo's energy system needs greater flexibility, discussions concerning the development of the gas network, as well as the possibility of producing gas from lignite, have not received merit attention.

He added that in the draft energy strategy, there are no detailed details on this issue only because the feasibility study with northern Macedonia is mentioned.

“In the draft energy strategy stresses that options for building a natural gas-based system in Kosovo are being analysed at the Gas Plan Master and in the study of feasibility for the gas interconction pipeline between North Macedonia and Kosovo, without being detailed details. Furthermore, in the draft strategy, there is no question about the possibility of gas production from lignite to Kosovo”.

Lion Shllaku, executive director of “KFOS” said that using gas would enable environmental parameters not only in the country but also global ones to improve.

According to him, the Government finds it clear that the region is also facing an energy crisis, so it also needs to take gas supplies seriously because it has an obligation.

We've invited this table to talk about gas, which is global. It's a lot of talk about how we do this winter. We've been talking about coal and we've been trying to talk about something that we can project energy developments in Kosovo. There was a need to think differently about energy. Using gas, we will improve many environmental, global parameters”.

This transition is by 2050. The government is clear we have a crisis in the region. Kosovo has had the strategy, but it has to go away and fuel me. Kosovo, aside from legislation, has entered regional obligations to be one of the countries becoming part of the <x1) gas.

“Two main options for gas, connect to the surrounding gas networks and we're gas producers. The origin of gas is Azerbaijan. This gas from America was banalized instead of talking about energy parameters. The part that has been seen coming to Kosovo has won the support of MSS”.

Gary Selenica, executive director from the Albanian Strategic Studies Centre, said that Kosovo is third in terms of coal pollution after Poland and Yemen, therefore it also needs to focus on other alternatives, EO reports.

The biggest “potential is that we have oil and gas in Albania and will export 50,000 tonnes of natural gas by 2028. All science is trying to reduce coal pollution”.

The most polluted coal countries are Germany and Poland and the third Kosovo. America has no gas, neither does Kosovo nor Albania”.

Sabit Restelica, an environmental affairs consultant, said the quality of lignite is very low, adding that there can be advancements through technology, EO reports.

“Lignite quality is very low and ash composition is not favourable in energy production. Technology has advanced greatly. Research into new technologies has achieved good results”.

Kosovo would have to have 5 million tons. We need electricity. Linjitti we need to develop it with technology to advance”.

The Institute for Development Research “Riinvest” in collaboration with the Kosovo Foundation for Open Society (KFOS) has launched the Green Action Space platform, which contains research, education and access activities to contribute to the construction of capacities in various actors and to advancing policies that connect with the Green Ages for the Western Balkans.

Under this platform a series of debates “G RE EN TALKS” concerning vital issues linking to the Green Agency as a priority on the path to integration into the European Union.
