More than 200 firefighters arrived at the fire station that exploded on the third floor of a building in the Bronx, officials said.
Many of the wounded were on the upper floors at the time of the fire, officials added.
At least 13 others have threatening life injuries in Brooklyn hospitals, officials said.
Many of the injured victims were on the upper floors, officials said, adding that they would likely suffer from heavy smoke inhalation, New York City Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro said during a press conference Sunday afternoon.
