All his official activities have been cancelled. Sassol, an Italian centre-left politician, was also treated at a French pneumonia hospital in September.
“This hospitalization has been necessary because of a heavy complications due to the failure of the” immune system, the notification said.
Sassol (65) is parliament speaker since 2019. His mandate expires this month and is not expected to extend. Because of the illness, he has failed to head parliament in Strasbourg in recent weeks and has missed the European Commission's annual events for the EU situation in September.
