Montenegrin Deputy Director of Police Dragan Gorovic told state television that 20 officers were injured, while a state clinic in Cetinje, reported that about 30 civilians sought assistance for injuries sustained during the protests.
Police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters, some of whom threw stones, bottles and fireworks, while church figures arrived by helicopter. Several other people burned tires and sat on the street, Reuters writes.
Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic described the police attacks as terrorism. The embassies of Germany, Italy, France, Britain, the United States, and the European Union condemned violence about the enthronement of Ionichiye II.
Ionikije II's surprise at a monastery in the town of Cetinje has sparked divisions within Montenegro for ties with neighbouring Serbia.
