Hecker had worked as German Chancellor Angela Merkel's foreign policy adviser before taking up his post as ambassador on 24 August.
“We are deeply sad and shocked over the sudden death of German ambassador to China,” said on Monday the German Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Our hearts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time. ”
The circumstances surrounding the diplomat's death have not been disclosed.
Hecker was appointed the 14th German ambassador to China in late August. Prior to his appointment, he served as Director of the Department of Foreign Policy, Security and Development and had been foreign policy adviser since 2017.
When he accepted the new job, Hecker had said his goals for the new mission were “contribute to the long-term and sustainable development of German-Ki relations through our work” and “further strengthen dialogue and partnership“.
Hecker had visited Kosovo in 2019, where Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj had been expected since then.
