According to local authorities, 3 of the wounded are in serious condition, due to wounds sustained on the neck and chest.

The country's prime minister, Yacinda Ardern, announced that the aggressor is a 32-year-old from Sri Lanka, identified only as “S” for legal reasons, and is considered one of the most dangerous extremists in New Zealand since 2016.

Investigators said the aggressor found the knife inside the supermarket, without giving further details because the investigation is under way.
