Guinea registered the first Marburg virus victim in West Africa, the World Health Organization announced on Monday.
Health authorities in Guinea have confirmed a death from the Marburg virus, a very efficient virus, similar to Ebola, the World Health Organisation said on Monday, Reuters reports.
This marks the first time the deadly disease has been identified in West Africa.
Guinea's new case was first identified last week, just two months after the country was declared liberated by Ebola after a brief explosion earlier this year that left 12 people dead.
The patient first requested treatment at a local clinic before his condition deteriorated rapidly, WHO's statement said.
Analysts at the national laboratory of bleeding fevers in Guinea and the Pasteur Institute in Senegal later confirmed the Marburg diagnosis.
“The potential for the Marburg virus to spread very quickly and more broadly means that we have to stop it at its beginnings”, said Matshidisto Moeti, regional director of O BSH for Africa.
“We are working with health authorities for a quick response”, Moet said.
The mortality rate from the Marburg virus has changed from 24% to 88% in past bombings depending on the strain of the virus and the management of cases, O reported BSH, adding that transmission occurs through contact with infected body fluids and tissues.
Symptoms include headaches, vomiting, muscle pain and bleeding through, broadcast the GE.
