49-year-old Deborah McGwinness had worked as chief public relations officer for three British Army leaders. She and her former military husband, Peter, 54, were found dead in their car at a panoromic site in Dorset in southern Britain.
A suicide note was found near their bodies, where none of us can do without each other,” was said in the investigation into the case.
They had no children together, but their cat was also found dead in the car.
Their friends said that the two looked happy the day before they died, even having organized a Mexican theme party at their home in southern London.
Mr. McGwinness was a war veteran in Iraq and served in the army for 22 years. He had mentioned suicide several times before after suffering from depression.
While Mrs. McGwinness had no precedents of mental illness and a few months earlier had completely recovered from a tumor he had had.
Her former chief Sir Richard Dunnat, said the woman was a <x0 model military>” and that the couple's death was a “double tragedy”.
Their vehicle was spotted the day after the tragedy by an employee who called emergency. Officials declared them dead at the scene, while tests showed that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.
Mrs. McGwinness's niece, Ester Carlisle, who had lived with the couple before being deployed abroad, said: “They were together 23 years and loved each other very much”
“Peter was sometimes sad and said he would live only until 60 years of age. Once he was angry when his son told him he had post-traumatic stress from serving in the military and that he should seek help”.
Dorset's legal doctor, Rachael Griffin said: “it is clear that they were devoted to each other and their friends. Behavior during the last days made no difference about what was to happen. Peter was diagnosed with depression, but the woman had no history of mental illness, even trying to change Peter's opinion when he expressed himself that she did not want to be alive”.
