Roth: Europe at risk of nationalism and populism

Former German Minister for Europe Michael Roth has estimated that Europe is facing serious threats both from outside and inside, stressing that increasing nationalism and populism poses a major danger to the future of the continent.
In a conversation at the podcastin P IKE with publicist Veton Surroi, Roth has said that Europe is under constant pressure, while security challenges have significantly increased following Russian aggression in Ukraine and changes in the United States' approach to European defence.
Europe is under attack inside, but also from outside. The rise of nationalism and populism is a great threat to all of us”, Roth said.
He has said that the message coming from US President Donald Trump is clear that European security should be Europe's own responsibility, adding that the continent can no longer rely on the traditional US role as the main guarantor of security.
“They are not committed to our European values. And this is a big problem not only for Kosovo, but also for Germany, for all of us in the EU, in Europe, Trump's message is very clear: I don't care about European security. It's your yard. It's your interests. Do it yourself. So this is a really big challenge for us”, he said.
According to Roth, European leaders for years did not understand enough the shift of the American focus towards the Indo-Peaceful region and competition with China, while Europe continued to rely on the American security umbrella. He has stressed that in the long term, the European Union must build its joint military capacities.
