European Union High Representative Josep Borrell has declared that Ratko Mladic's sentence ends a key judgment in Europe's war crimes history, including the genocide that took place in Bosnia.
He stressed that this judgment will contribute to the healing of all who suffered.
The final trial in Ratko Mladic's case by the International Criminal Tribunal Mechanism (IRMCT) ends a key judgment in Europe's recent history of war crimes, including genocide, which took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Remembering those who lost their lives, our deepest sympathy is with their loved ones and those who survived. This judgment will contribute to the healing of all who suffered. The EU expects all political actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans to demonstrate full co-operation with international courts, respect their decisions and accept their independence and impartiality, Borell has said.
In addition to Borell's statement, the denial of genocide and the praise of criminals are in conflict with EU values.
“Pronounce genocide, revisionism and praise of war criminals oppose the most fundamental European values. Today's decision is an opportunity for leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, in effect, to lead the way in honoring victims and promoting a favourable environment for reconciliation to overcome the legacy of war and to build lasting peace. This is a precondition for the stability and security of Bosnia and Herzegovina and essential for its path to the EU. It is also among the 14 main priorities of the Commission's opinion on Bosnia and Herzegovina's EU membership application. International and local courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring countries must continue their mission to ensure justice for all victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide and their families. There can be no impunity”, Borrell said.
