Kurti for Serbian media: We can change the Constitution for national unity

“I cannot make dialogue with Serbia the first priority of the new government”, Albin Kurti told Serbian media in Kosovo, “Kosovo Online” during a visit to Gjirokastra, as part of his party's electoral campaign in Albania for the 25 April elections, adding that as long as the Serbian List [...]

When asked by “Cosovo Online” if his position on dialogue with Serbia changed after meeting European Union emissary Miroslav Lajcak, Kurti replied:

“As far as dialogue with Serbia is concerned, the importance of this dialogue is in sixth or seventh place in public opinion. I said I was making a compromise to bring her to fourth place. But I can't make that first priority, because citizens don't like it, and my position hasn't changed even after meeting with Lajcak, so the first two priorities are still employment and justice, priority is pandemic, and after that there may be a dialogue with Serbia, which otherwise should be well prepared and principled. In the dialogue so far, Kosovo has been more the subject than the factor. In our government, in dialogue with Serbia, Kosovo is becoming a factor”, Kurti said.

Kurti has said he has taken the trust of citizens even in the fact that he has taken on the obligation to devote himself to the referendum law.

In Kosovo, we have a lack of referendum law. One of the obligations we have taken over in the election campaign is that we are dedicated to the referendum law. But the law for referenda is not enough. Unfortunately, when the Constitution of Kosovo was adopted in June 2008, Article 1.3 says that we do not have the right to join another state, we have to change it one day, but it doesn't happen quickly and easily, because we also need the votes of two-thirds of minorities in the Parliament”, he said.

“in the Kosovo Assembly, 10 countries are controlled by the Serbian List, which shows that we cannot change the Constitution. We want to change the Constitution someday, but we have to respect what's valuable. I believe it is possible to change, which means that Serbs in Kosovo do not support it because they have behind Belgrade and their parallel structures in Kosovo. They must have proper organization but also freedom to express their will and interest. Therefore, the influence Serbia has in Kosovo is expressed by pressure on Serbs not to be integrated in Kosovo and to have the opportunity to further improve the Kosovo Constitution”, Kurti added.

He said they do not want referendum and union at the expense of someone, while added that they do not want it with conflicts either.

“We don't want union, referendum or changing the Constitution to the harm of someone else, but for our interests in a peaceful and democratic manner, not in conflict, but of course we always criticize and challenge all contradictions that exist in such a document as the Constitution and sometimes even in the” laws, Kurti said.
