Unproved videos published by Afghan news agency Aajaj showed Iranian border guards and Taliban fighters trading shots along a border wall near the Afghan province, Nimroz.
Iranian state media said the clash erupted over the Taliban's uncertainty of the official border line.
The semi-official news agency, Tasnim, said Iran has built a hundreds of metres border wall within the official border with Afghanistan to prevent traffickers.
Iranian farmers reportedly crossed the other side of the wall to exploit the land within Iran's borders, but because of the wall, the Taliban thought Afghanistan's borders were violated.
