Kosovo's economy in 2021: The Kurti Government's Unplanned Access, Prices of Poverty Control

The unprecedented economic development mentioned by Prime Minister Kurti was not translated into a rise in welfare for the common people. Although this year [the second with the pandemic] was more productive in business activity, the economic growth in prices, energy crises, and other problems caused serious financial anxiety. Politics and interventions of [...]

Kosovo citizens have expected an increase in economic perspective and a decrease in their financial anxiety during 2021. This meant increased jobs, more capital projects, higher salaries, safer jobs and higher savings.

How Prices rose in September 2021

But all of this remains hostage to Kosovo's dependence on diaspora remittances and the lack of economic diversification.

Did something change in 2021?

According to the Progress Report for 2021, Kosovo's business environment has had little improvement. A little! Private sector development remains limited by the widespread informal economy.

What does economist and former prominent politician Dardan Sejdiu say about the economic situation in the country this year?

Dardan Sejdiu was part of VV's until 2018

Sejdiu for Periscope has declared that Kurti Government has made no kind of serious intervention in Kosovo's economic structure. According to him, the current government has not changed at all from the predigma of past governments and that it has shown itself weak.

What Sejdiu sees most seriously is that this year is ending in circles 700 million The euro waste from the state budget, which could be invested in various sectors.

You can make whatever package, but 700m euros are not released and there is no public investment. That's the opposite of what they think about the developing state and an anti-cyclical economy. The mouth of this government is full of intervention, but we've actually seen a contraction and an extraordinary conservative in terms of access to direct intervention in the economy.” Dardan Sejdiu

Conservativeism was the economic approach that was described to earlier Kosovo governments, that Haradinaj, that of that Thaci II and I.

Pandemia had major impact on economy

Dardan Sejdiu also estimates that this year's economic growth is not a measure of parameters, as civic welfare remains the same.

There are countries that have extraordinary GDP but have huge inequality. When a government comes to power with a social-democrat paradigm, with an economic developmental concept, the success of measure from neo-liberal optics then normally we have big questions. So it's not that there's a serious economic structural intervention, it's not that we have a clear vision for years to come.

Sejdiu thinks this government leaves much to be desired. Meanwhile, it provides recommendations on what could be done away with improving and advancing the country's economy.

You should have a clear vision where you're taking the economy. Without a vision there is no adequate planning. We see only when they present a plan for development. What is it, which sectors will develop, how will this country's economic structure be guided, what will we invest in education, what in the economy? So where we will see Kosovo after 4 years” Sejdiu said of Periscope.

Iron Murati ʹ Minister of Finance and Transfers at Kurti II Government

Of course, Periscop's journalist has had no answer to these questions of Mr. Sejdiu, responses Prime Minister Albin Kurti must offer.

The latter, in recent months, has swollen for increased remittances, but for Sejdiu it has not been eaten by them.

This isn't about any policy, either in terms of those fiscals... it's just the post-independent behavior of any citizen who's been closed for a year. ”

The minister of finance throughout the year has presented two packages of recovery, one worth over 400m euros. However, many sectors have remained dissatisfied with support, such as businesses, gastronomies and hotels.
