The top commander of the Indian Army has been killed by the helicopter crash he was flying, India Air Force announced.
Chief of Defence Staff General Bippin Rawat, his wife and 11 others died after the type helicopter “Mi-17V5” crashed in the hills near the town of Coonor on Wednesday morning, the BBC reports, records The Express. A survivor is being treated in the hospital.
The 63-year-old general was appointed the first chief of the Defence Staff in January 2019. The new post joined the land, air and sea forces, and Rawat has led several operations, including in the India-controlled Kashmir part.
The Indian Air Force said they ordered an investigation into this accident, which occurred in fog weather. The security commission, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is holding an emergency meeting.
The helicopter had just been lifted from the military base in Smug and headed for the town of Wellington, less than 60 miles [100 km] from its destination, where the general had planned to visit the Staff College of Defense Services.
Although the Russian model, “Mi-17V5”, is among the most sophisticated military helicopters for transport, the aging air fleet is often blamed for the large number of accidents.
