The EU had approved the plan since June to help Turkey with 3 billion euros from 2021 to 2024 to help millions of Syrian refugees sheltered in Turkey.
The funds would be distributed to refugees themselves, thus helping more than 1.5 million people to cover basic needs such as food, rent, transportation or medicine.
A recent study conducted by the Turkish Red Crescent and the International Federation of the Red Cross has revealed that the level of debt among refugees in Turkey has doubled since the outbreak of pandemic.
Turkey houses more than 5 million refugees and most of them fled from the war in Syria, and remains the preferred route for other people fleeing the conflict to enter Europe.
In 2016, a year after the refugee crisis when more than a million of them entered Europe, the EU promised to assist Turkey with 6 billion euros. / REL
