Zaev's resignation: Why is this an event for regional stability?

No one who believes in progress, stability, regional co-operation and European agenda should rejoice in the resignation of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and the election defeat of his LSDM party in the Northern Macedonia local elections. At least Kosovo and Albania.

How damaging is Zoran Zaev's resignation from the post of prime minister of northern Macedonia and from his party's chief, LSDM?

First, it would structurally damage the pro-European orientation of northern Macedonia. Reaction forces that gained local power ( VMRO- The DPMNE and the Albanian opposition parties are not known for emphasising the pro-European agenda. This is a unfortunate fact, but fact, though.

Second, Zaev's government was probably the most progressive (politically and economically) government that had Northern Macedonia from its founding in 1991. Always compared to previous governments, Zaev's was singled out for increased transparency in the field of rule and law, and sought to maintain the agenda of interethnic stability.

Third, Zaev's move seriously jeopardises the further functioning of the Balkan Open by leaving Albania and Serbia alone, with no excuse for further continuation of the project. By all means, this will be read aloud by the current government and political leadership in Kosovo, though, in essence, implies bad news in the medium and long term. Above all, it's bad news for the fact that the Balkan Open is just another label for the Mike-Schenenı, which was one of the main points of the Washington Agreement from September 2020. In short, the threat of the Balkan Open is the endangerment of the Washington Agreement, and with that also unnecessary complications in the efforts to expand the influence of the US in the region (the impact, which mostly depends on Albanians in Kosovo and Albania).

In short, reactionary forces gained local power in northern Macedonia. Today, after Zaev's resignation, early election announcements should be expected, while the odds are that VMRO- The DPMNE, along with their Albanian allies, will also gain central power. Here, it must be repeated that, like the V MRO- DPMNE and Movement B The ESA (which won Albania's largest municipality, Tetovo), is not renowned for pro-European or pro-Western agendas. Historically, their ideological eyes were turned to the East either from Russia (VMRO-DPMNE) or Turkey (BESA). Although this may sound contradictory and contradictory when it is formulated so directly, it remains a fact that none of them can deny.

As of today, this fact will be much more of a concern for the European Union and its imposing Balkan rapporteurs than for Zaev and his LSDM. The impulsive resignation of Zaev should also be interpreted from this angle: as an act of protest against the ignoring and indifference of Brussels at the most sensitive moments in northern Macedonia. It was such a serious disregard that it was easily used by the most reactionive and anti-European groups in the country. Zaev's message to Brussels with his resignation is simple: If you don't want to listen to your mother, you will now hear your stepmother. So, if its governance wasn't enough European, from now on the region and Brussels will see how many Europeans the VMRO- agenda will be. DPMNE and their allies.

Of course, in the short term, the overthrow of the LSDM in local elections will be publicly disguised as the victory of the reformists and the progressors. The phrase on profiting and corruption will be heard, on democracy's variety and other nonsense. Soon, however, it will be noted that Zaev's defeat was the result of ordinarian demagogy against a politically illiterate society. From today, the southwestern Balkan region has slipped even a deeper scale into instability and, as usual, driven by political groups that are covered by suspicious agendas with phrases on liberation and progress.
