The new law envisions that all Austrians who refuse inoculation be called to the district administration authorities. If they ignore the call twice, they will be fined 3600 euros. If this violation puts other people in “serious risk”, or if they continue to ignore the order, the fine amounts to up to 7,200 euros.
The bill will be submitted on December 6th, but “Die Presse” has previously received the draft preliminary proposal.
However, some elements remain unclear, especially if someone continues to refuse the vaccine even after paying the fine. According to “Die Presse”, one of the disputed solutions is that those who cannot prove that they are vaccinated will receive a fine every six months.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), 65.2% of Austria's population has been vaccinated.
The announcement to make vaccines mandatory has increased divisions in Austrian society. President Alexander van der Bellen was among the first to warn that “exists a major risk that divisions are deepening”.
