I consider that on October 9th, France will resume the fight to lift the universal death penalty”, Macro said in a speech in Paris on the 40th anniversary of the removal of the death penalty in France.
He said that as part of the European Union's French presidency in the first half of 2022, he will organise a summit in Paris with the nongovernmental organisation “S together against the death penalty” to unite civil societies of countries still serving death sentences for the importance and urgency of his removal.
Robert Badinter, former French justice minister, praised for the removal of the death penalty in the country in 1981, said he was absolutely convinced that the death penalty would disappear in the world, because, as he said, it is a shame for mankind.
It does not protect society, it shames it”, Badinter said in a speech in Pantheon. Macron recalled that in 1981, France was the 35th country in the world to lift the death penalty.
Until now, 106 states have done so, and 50 have declared a de jure mortorium or de facto executions”, Macron said. He expressed regret that at least 483 death sentences were implemented in 33 countries in the world last year. The death penalty is in effect, among other things, in China, the United States, and India.
