European Union Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell has said the neighbourhood within the bloc is on fire because of crises from Belarus to tensions in the Mediterranean, which require urgent and united responses by EU member states.
The European top diplomat also said the Balkans is a sensitive country for tensions and that the EU should provide assistance to improve regional security and fulfill its ambition to be a reliable global force in foreign policy.
The Socialist Party's veteran said the European Union faces a major test for resolving disputes in the Balkans, including the dispute between Kosovo and Serbia, writes the Financial Times, broadcasts the GE.
If we do not stabilise the Balkans, it will be very difficult to name it geopolitical power, because no one else will, only Europeans”, diplomat Borrell said.
He also cited tensions between Turkey and Greece in the eastern Mediterranean, saying that there is a major danger of fighting that goes beyond words.
Borrell also said that the EU should counter sanctions in connection with the poisoning of Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny, if there is clear evidence that Russian officials are involved in this case.
