A man suspected of spying on Egypt until he had worked at the information office in the German government of Angela Merkel, and until December last year, writes Deutsche Welle.
Security authorities believe Egypt has recruited individuals to spy out opposition groups living in Germany.
Federal Information Office employee in the German government has been found to have worked for the Egyptian Secret Service for years, says the report presented during Thursday by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer.
“We cannot comment because the investigations are continuing, nor on the issues of personnel”, said Steffen Seibert, spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel and chief of the federal Bureau for Information.
This man reportedly worked for the service of visitors to the office for information as middle-level employees, writes the German daily Bild.
That means he had to take a test and at least two years of professional training to get this job.
According to the report, German police have undertaken “executive measures” against this man in December last year. Visitors' service ambitions have been checked as part of the investigation, Bild writes, among other things.
Federal prosecutor has confirmed that this man is accused of spying, and has announced that the investigation is continuing.
